Nathan Zimmerman MS, CSCS, USAW, SFG

 Nathan is a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist through the NSCA, a certified level 2 Sports Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting, a certified a Strong First Girya Instructor, and a G3 certified Krav Maga Global Instructor. He holds a MS in Kinesiology from Cal Poly, SLO. Nathan assisted at a SFG(certification) for the first time in November, 2015. His experience includes working as a physical therapy aide at the Body and Balance Center in San Luis Obispo and as a volunteer aide at Bell Trace in Bloomington, Indiana. At Bell Trace, he treated shoulder, knee, hip, and back injuries. Nathan also had the privilege of interning at Athlon Elite under Ryan Joiner. Since then he has gained experience in the fitness field through working at the Cal Poly Rec Center as a personal trainer, as well as helping with strength and conditioning for a local kickboxing team. Nathan has trained with and learned from the likes of well known and influential trainers in the strength and conditioning community including Dan John, Pavel Tsatsouline, Doug Nepodal, Brett Jones, Jeff O’Connor, Max Shank, Kelly Starrett and David Whitley.

Martial Arts Background:

Nathan started his martial arts training in 1995, training Taekwondo in South Korea. He participated in worldwide competition at Kukkiwon, the World Taekwondo Center. Nathan really started getting serious about his martial arts training in 2006, training Hawaiian Kempo and Grappling at SLO Kickboxing in San Luis Obispo California. In 2007 he transitioned to Krav Maga and Muay Thai and fell in love with both systems.

In 2009 Nathan passed his Level 1 Krav Maga Instructor test with Krav Maga Worldwide and competed in his first Muay Thai bout, which he won. While pursuing his Masters Degree in Kinesiology from Cal Poly, Nathan continued his Muay Thai and Krav Maga training, continuing to compete in Muay Thai all through college and added boxing training with boxing coach Darby Evans.

After graduation, Nathan opened his own Krav Maga school in 2013 and made the transition to training with Krav Maga Global under the tutelage of Alan Predolin and Eyal Yanilov.

Nathan is currently a G3 level Krav Maga instructor and a certified Law Enforcement Instructor with Krav Maga Global and continues to train boxing and kickboxing with his coach Darby Evans. Nathan continues to train with and learn from some of the best Krav Maga practictioners on the planet including Eyal Yanilov, Alan Predolin, Ilya Dunsky, Franlyn Harkamp, and Peter Lakatos

KT is a Cal Poly graduate with a MS and BS in Kinesiology, a certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist, a certified level 2 Sports Performance Coach through USA Weightlifting, and a certified StrongFirst Girya Instructor. In her undergrad she worked with Dr. Hagobian as a research assistant examining exercise’s effect on appetite hormones, resulting in KT becoming a published co-author for the study. Additionally she was an assistant coach for SLO High School’s shot put and discus throwers from 2009 to 2011. As a graduate student KT taught undergraduate exercise physiology and biomechanics labs while conducting her thesis comparing different strength training program designs. In additiong to her position at STF, KT is a part-time lecturer at Cal Poly in the Kinesiology department, and Mission Prep’s Strength Coach.

Boxing and Kickboxing Coach

Darby Evans is an accomplished and diverse martial artist who has trained in traditional Boxing techniques, Khmer Boxing and Muay Thai.  Darby has studied martial arts for over 30 years and has been teaching for the past eighteen years. He specializes in Boxing, Khmer Boxing and Muay Thai.  Darby started his boxing education in 1977  in the School of Hard Knocks and has continued to learn ever since.

Hardstyle Kettlebells

Our Hardstyle Kettlebell program is the only kettlebell program in San Luis Obispo that is run by certified kettlebell instructors. Our instructors are highly educated (both have Masters degrees in Kinesiology) and highly experienced in their field. This program is a high intensity program geared towards building strength and muscle and reducing fat.

Krav Maga

Sleeping Tiger Fitness is a licensed Krav Maga school through Krav Maga Global, bringing you Krav Maga from the source in Israel. Krav Maga is a practical and tactical system that teaches how to prevent, deal with and overcome all kinds of violence and attacks. It prepares students for real life self defense situations. Krav Maga techniques are based off of instinctive responses, which makes them easier to learn. This program allows students to get fit while also learning skills and techniques that could one day save their life. This membership includes Boxing and Kickboxing classes.

Boxing and Kickboxing

Our combatives program teaches a combination of western style boxing, Khmer Kickboxing and Muay Thai Kickboxing. Punch and kick your way in to amazing shape while learning effective punching and kicking techniques and improving your agility by practicing the boxing footwork. It’s a fantastic and fun way to get in to shape and you don’t need to be a professional fighter to do it! You are your own competition.
